today marks the 20th anniversary of princess diana’s death. i really can’t believe it. i remember exactly where is was 20 years ago, and that feeling of sadness has never gone away.
for those of you that follow me on instagram, you know i have been posting pictures of diana for the last month or so. i wanted to celebrate her. i grew up with her, therefore, like many of you, i’ve been greatly impacted by everything about her. i realized with these instagram posts that everyone loves diana and that we all miss her- it’s a universal loss.
i’ve been asking myself “what is it?” about diana that was so special. i think it’s because she was a princess, but was real and like all of us she just wanted to be loved, to love and to help others. a universal truth about us all.
yes, she was beautiful, the most beautiful. she was mysterious, even mischievous (another thing we all love about her), and of course she was a fashion plate, but she was also human. we all somehow related to her pain, her loss, her fears, and her insecurities…..we related because these things we all feel and these experiences unite us. because of this connection with others she was a new kind of princess, like nothing we had seen before. she truly was the queen of hearts and the peoples princess.
i love all of these pictures taken of diana my mario testino for vanity fair. she looks like an angel and i pray she is looking down from heaven and now knows how much she was truly loved. she will forever and ever be our princess.
