a private memorial service for oscar de la renta, who passed away last month, was held today in new york city at the church of st. ignatius loyola on the upper east side.

the biggest names in fashion, politics, and art turned out to say good bye to the man who touched so many with his talent, his humor, his kindness and his love.

i pondered on how to commemorate oscar’s memorial service. it seemed entirely inappropriate to show images of the notables coming in and out of the service. so i thought sharing a beautiful poem read by oscar’s dear friend, vogue editor-in-chief, would be my personal tribute.

i have never met oscar, or anna for that matter, but i have heard from many that they loved each other dearly and spoke almost everyday, therefore, this poem read today is the perfect tribute- a tribute of love.

– also, carolyne roehm posted her own tribute, she worked for oscar for many years, this week on her blog about her sweet, enduring and special relationship they had with each other, read here. so touching.

Below is a poem that Anna Wintour read at the memorial service held today in New York City to commemorate the designer’s life.

He is Gone

by David Harkins

You can shed tears that he is gone
Or you can smile because he has lived
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday
You can remember him and only that he is gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
