THE WHITE NARRATIVE

the best thing about having a blog is the narrative that can be told…i love how ideas and stories can just build on one another…how one thing leads to another, that’s the case with last weeks valentino couture collection in nyc that was called “sala bianca.”

the collection was probably the most beautiful collection i’ve ever seen, i really can not stop thinking about it, and i’m certain this won’t be the last you hear from me about it…

…it was all white, inspired by the 1968 valentino collection. the marketing for the collection was photographed on model marisa berenson in cy twombly’s rome home, pictures of marisa in the marketing campaign and pictures of cy’s home, mixed with details of the collection help continue the narrative..

i was curious about finding out more about “sala bianca” as i continued to develop this narrative… “sala bianca”, also know as “white hall” was the name of the couture week at the palazzo pitti in florence, held during the early 1950’s for italian designers at around the same time as the paris couture shows.

valentino started his own design house in the early 60’s, he was invited to show his collection at “sala bianca” in 1962. the collection was a huge success and set valentino on his course, and the “sala blanca” shows are what put italian fashion on the map…

so in many ways last weeks valentino couture collection not only celebrated the opening of the new nyc flagship on 5th ave., and the 1968 all-white collection of valentino, it also celebrates the design event in florence that introduced valentino to the world- “sala bianca”- the white narrative!
