so i’m sure it’s pretty clear that michael s. smith is one of my favorite interior designers and overall style icons (neck and neck with oscar de la renta). so not a surprise i’m featuring his home in bel air (he moved recently), featured in elle decor and his book michael s. smith houses, photography by simon upton.

this bel air jewel is a perfect example of michael’s signature design style and defined aesthetic. from orange county but a self professed anglophile, michael’s bel air residence is a perfect combination of everything english and everything california with smith signatures like moroccan, indian and african textiles and objects thrown in. the perfect mix of traditional old world style with california casual ease.

michael always says, “english houses are the prettiest and most comfortable”. they are also very fancy and fancy is something he is strongly associated with. canopy beds, gilt consoles and mirrors, serious antiques, chinoiserie, silk damasks, needle point rugs are favorites. refined, formal, elegant- chic!

california in-door out-door living is a huge influence on how michael designs. linen upholstery, coral, modern art, ikats and block print linens, wicker furniture, potted orchids mixed in with the fancy anglophile furnishings and details creates the signature look that is so clearly his!

fancy and casual, formal and relaxed, refined and comfortable- michael s smith’s defined style- bel air traditional! a perfect mix, the best combination, my favorite!

fancy antiques like georgian mirror and george II gilt console in the entry way  balanced with potted orchid and coral object- a perfect mix!
